We woke up in the lovely motel rooms this morning, which was bliss. We had yummy eggs on toast at our motel downed with some coffee, which was so good. After a short devo we hopped on our bright green bus and headed for the lush green mountains, that kind of reminded us of a less tropical Mount Dandenong.
We went to visit a woman’s prison at the top of a picturesque mountain. After a climb, we arrived at the prison which was different to what we would think a prison environment would typically be, the guards appeared more relaxed and easy going. Walking into the prison the women inmates were smiling and greeting us.
This morning was our first day at our new base at Church Of God (COG), and we all slowly woke up one by one to get our breakfasts. Tim and Em went in to have a meeting with the pastors of the base, and came to the conclusion that our accommodation wasn’t the best for when people are getting sick and with a gastro virus being passed around! Therefore, we have migrated to home #3, a motel around 10 minutes from the COG. We have gone back to 4/5 in a room with amazing wifi and air conditioning!
Today we got packed our suitcases and cleaned our rooms, ready to move to our new location! After a few final goodbyes at YWAM we drove for just over an hour to the other side of the city of Cebu. We were welcomed at the Church of God, and by Pastor Earl, our host.
The morning started like always with 7am breakfast consisting of bananas and choc-chip pancakes with blueberry and chocolate syrup. Today there was no pancake challenge as everyone was anticipating the snorkelling day that had been planned. Everyone was ready for the day at 8am for an 8.30 start (Fillipino time). An hour later, we came to a dirt ‘carpark’ and jumped in a man powered (with a pole) dinghy boat where everyone got their feet wet and their sea legs on.
What a day. It commenced with a typical Filipino breakfast of rice, cinnamon bread, apples and corn beef (lots of carbs as energy for the big day ahead). Jordan kick-started the day with his devotion, he explored the difference between being expectant for God as compared to being expecting (yes very confusing at first). We then gathered together to pray for the day, this was done differently to western culture, with everyone praying aloud simultaneously (as opposed to one after the other).
It began with breakfast. Eggs, bread, sausages and rice – we really are blessed here in YWAM Cebu. Despite the humidity and piercing heat, we are always welcomed with smiles all round and an overall joyful spirit. After that our team came together to share the meaningful things we saw over the past few days, and of course the most fun part: schoolie and toolie of the day! Schoolie went to Josh and Meg for various noteworthy deeds and Toolie to Emily for mistaking dry shampoo for deodorant, which made an interesting story!
Today is the day that we have all been looking forward to since we first heard about on Wednesday. We signed up for the choice of Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Table tennis or Chess on Thursday, we could choose up to three sports. We were told that there was going to be an opening ceremony, so Friday night the team (mostly the Girls) creates paper Aussie flags for us to wave around on the day to support those playing. As well as the flags we had green and gold stripes on our faces. It was decided that we would all wear our schoolies revolutions tops.
Today was a very thought-provoking and challenging day. Starting with everyone waking up after a good nights sleep – apart from Sweeden, who had quite an adventurous night.
Every morning starting as usual with breakfast – cereal and bread, which was a change up from constant rice! Then we continued on with the morning by having a community worship session lasting around an hour. It was enjoyable to see different cultures interacting through worship.
