Day 15: Backus is Back

After a long week of serving within the community our team had an exploration day at the beautiful Kawasan Falls. 

We woke up bright and early for a three hour bus ride to the falls, and after a little hike we came across the picture perfect location. The water was absolutely freezing but we all jumped in anyway, taking hundreds of photos and enjoying the scenery. We then went on the raft underneath the waterfall, and not knowing what to expect, were completely shocked at the power of the falls. It was actually surprising painful to lay underneath the falls and we all came out very red, sore, and claiming how this would never pass health and safety regulations in Australia.

About two thirds of the group then hiked up the mountain some more to get to waterfalls further upstream which Austin, Steph, Shannan, Julia, Erin, Daniel and I decided was perfect to jump off. This waterfall was about 10 meters high, and after Austin jumped first, the rest of our small group followed suit. While many southeast Asian tourists struggled to muster the courage to jump off while in helmets and life jackets, our whole group jumped with ease without a guide (although, a guide did end up adopting our small group for free to show us exactly where to jump from). Jumping from that height into such deep water was such a great opportunity and a thrill we will all remember.

We then made the trip back down the mountain to the van and headed to lunch at Maccas which was a real treat after only eating local food for majority of our trip. The frozen cokes, fries and burgers really gave us a sense of home.

We then headed back to base, exchanging stories of first loves and most embarrassing moments, and bonding as a team.
